There are few activities more addictive than playing the lottery. It\u2019s a vice that\u2019s fueled by false hope, and one that\u2019s hard to quit once it starts taking over your life. It\u2019s a habit that\u2019s often exacerbated by the fact that it exposes people to a barrage of advertising aimed at convincing them that they haven\u2019t lost anything. And it\u2019s a habit that can be particularly damaging to older adults.<\/p>\n
Despite the negative effects of the game, states are still selling tickets, and they\u2019re doing so for two reasons: The first is that they need money. And the second is that they\u2019re convinced that people are going to gamble anyway, so the government might as well capture some of it.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s worth remembering, however, that states can generate much more revenue through taxes and fees than they can through lottery sales. And it\u2019s worth remembering that there are a lot of other ways for people to gamble, including casinos, sports books, and horse races, and that the percentage of state revenues that come from these activities is much lower than the percentage of state lottery revenue.
